Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.” Then he told them a parable: “The land of a rich man produced abundantly. And he thought to himself, ‘What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?’ Then he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God.”

My name is Mukhobeh Moses Khaukha and I am the Executive Director of the NGO, Randa United Farmers Group (RUFG) in Bududa, Uganda.
In 2008 more than 70% of the population in the rural mountainous area of the Bududa District in Eastern Uganda lived in poverty making its one of the poorest districts in Uganda. The devastating poverty, Literacy, AIDS epidemic and natural disasters (landslides) have created an environment where our children suffer from to serious malnutrition related disease, poor medical care and inadequate school facilities and a shortage of supplemental materials, like books and other necessary school supplies. Thanks to the Universal Primary Education [UPE] in Uganda, the number of Bududa children enrolled in the schools has nearly doubled to five (5) million since 2002, creating further strain on limited resources. Many of these children are orphans and in need of food, clean water, and educational materials, including uniforms. Add to this a population growth rate of 3.4% and you begin to get a clearer picture of the daily problems we face with each morning in our communities.

What is Randa United Farmers Group (RUFG)?
RUFG is a not-for-profit registered CBO organization created by a group of men and women farmers dedicated to promote and empower our rural community to come out of poverty and to be the foremost competent and effective organization to provide services to alleviate mass suffering through the care and support of children, widows, orphans and HIV/AIDS affected and infected people. Our empowerment programs include Community Library I. e story telling, Beads Making, Piggery, Fish Farming, Mushroom Growing, and Fruit Tree Farming, help families to lift themselves up and break the chains of crushing poverty.
