As you mentioned - Paul Farmer brought up the fetishization of scaling up as an issue in social entrepreneurship. This is the topic of discussion on Social Edge this week 05/06/08 - please join in.

It's been pointed out for a long time that biofuels are not just reducing the acreage used for foodstuffs, but also are responsible for much of the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. The other main cause for that is, of course, the soaring consumption of everything -- in this case particularly soy -- in China. I wonder if a similar argument to pollution will be made: China should learn from the mistakes of the West and reduce meat consumption??

Another casualty to rising food prices may be organic farming, which is much more extensive (i.e. uses much more land for the same output) than farming with pesticides.

On the positive side, I have long been thinking that Europe's future is as an exporter of agricultural goods (as well as lifestyle). I can imagine that in a relatively short time, Europe will undergo an agricultural revival at a number of levels (both large-scale and "boutique").

The citizen base is a very interesting initiative. I will look into it more in depth. You're right, everything starts on the ground. Online opportunities cannot be a substitute for offline actions. Thanks for commenting - please don't hesitate to give more feedback and/or information on CBI. It's highly appreciated.

We are using very similar language with our Citizen Base Initiative at Ashoka. (citizenbase.org) There is incredible power in the collaborative engagement of a wide base of citizen support. The internet is opening all sorts of opportunities but many citizen sector organizations are finding creative solutions on the ground as well. Social Entrepreneurs such as Tom are driving this movement further. Onward.

Marc Gold was set on the path he now travels when he was just a child, when his father, photographer Albert Gold, explained "the meaning of life." He took the 8-year-old into the bathroom and had him look in the mirror. Gold recounts the conversation:

Albert: ''What do you see?'
Marc: 'I see myself.'
Albert: 'Okay. How old will you be in 70 years?'
Marc: '78.'
Albert: 'Okay, when you are 78 years old, look in the mirror again and ask yourself one question, because by then your life will be almost over: 'Did you live a life that made this a better world or not? Very simple. If the answer is yes, I am proud of you, and if not, I am disappointed.'
Marc: 'But how am I going to make this a better world?'
Albert: 'That's your job. You figure it out.'
